Happy summer everyone! What a beauty weekend we just had! And also an Amazing Fundraiser for Alex Janke that was held.
I wanted to share this story because Alex is such an inspiration. I first heard about the fundraiser through my friend Elaine. Alex is a good friend of her son Curtis and we have met Alex at family events over the years.

He was diagnosed in late February after a massive seizure, which took everyone by surprise. He seemed in good health previously, with no red flags. When a brain tumour was discovered it was expected to be benign. Instead, doctors at Hamilton’s Juravinski Cancer Centre discovered that not only was it malignant, it was aggressive. Effectively a version of the same glioblastoma that killed The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie. Alex is currently undergoing treatment at Juravinski Cancer Centre.
Alex’s Brain Cancer Fundraiser
He is raising funds for Juravinski Cancer Centre, which as you know, is near and dear to our hearts as well. Last Thursday’s K-W Clubs for Brain Cancer fundraiser involved 32 area restaurants, including Kitchener’s Gilt Restaurant, which is where Alex holds the position of chef. Dozens of restaurants around the region have partnered with him to sell their own version of club sandwiches, one of Janke’s favourites, to raise money for cancer research. I visited Gilt on Thursday with Elaine and some other friends. The staff were super pumped about the day, with big smiles and support for their friend and colleague. In fact they also donated their tips to the cause for that entire day. How awesome is that!
